Chinese EVs are more affordable and much more advanced than any other EVs in the market. Chinese companies are not profit driven but consumer oriented that to ensure the affordability is the objective for all Chinese EVs. That should be a good thing for all consumers around the world. Americans are speechless by the high quality, affordability and advancement of Chinese Evs. But they cannot help but still talk with sour grape tones and trying to pick bones out of eggs. Basically they feel the time for American companies cheating and fooling consumers with artificially high price tag will be threatened by more affordable and more advanced EVs made in China.

After I drove Chinese EVs, I don’t have desire to drive any other EVs anymore. They are just that good. And finally consumers will not be cheated and fooled by the superficially high price tags on American and European cars. As. Consumer I feel my right of buying a more affordable and more advanced EVs made in China has taken away by our government. This is a violation of human right and principle of free market economy which should be driven by consumers not by government control.

Export of EV to EU is 7% of China total export. Export of ICEV to China is 25% of EU total export. Need to say more? Its not the gain but the pain. The question should be 'who get hurt more in the end?' What will happen to the Chinese EV industry to lose all 7% on EU market? What will happen to EU automobile industry to lose 25% of their total export on Chinese market? Which has the potential for an epic industry wide extinction? Perhaps its another American plan to harvest Europe...ie bomb the gas pipeline? Yet in all their short 500 years European colonial wisdom, EU have decided lapped up the American narratives of overcapacity. China after giving a grace period for the expiration of sales of ICEV, can always come up with 'going green' and slap a 25% tariff on all ICEV or simply made it not registrable for ICEV in China...an internal policy and learning from Americans narrative of 'environmental protection' to stretch it, 'national security'. Yes, environment threat can be viewed as national security. If EU want lengthen the list to other than 'green priducts' then it will be reciprocaled accordingly. The most important question is who has the bigger market that is still growing. This alone, EU is already fighting someone above its pay grade. Then the next important question is can EU handle more inflation by decoupling from China? On the other hand, can China live with less EU products? Can China live without EU's wine and cognac and EU pork? These are the more relevant question. Its not the gain but the pain.

I'm past ready to purchase my first EV; however, recent events suggest that the wait for my brand/model (i.e., battery-swappable) of choice to reach U.S. shores may be longer than anticipated. That said, I fear that the intended effect of tariffs here in the U.S. will prove ineffective, at least from the perspective of my purchase decision. Thus, the environment and future generations who inherit it are, unfortunately, the biggest losers.

U.S. is doing better now in terms of building capacity for EVs and renewables, but EU already has a closer relationship with China. This is not a good decision for the EU in particular, but I believe that they will walk it back. Give it some time. I find this both funny as well as ironic considering that most manufacturers as well as consumers are against these tariffs. The EU spends plenty of resources regulating American and Chinese firms rather than trying to compete with these companies. Good analysis overall! This just seems like it's bad for everyone involved.

The west always accuse China of stealing technology, yet here we are, saying nothing as the EU selectively bumped up SAIC's tariffs because the company refused to reveal their battery chemical compound details.

I hate the EU but I understand what it's aims are. China flooded the UK with cheap steel in the 90s and 00s when British Steel making was still going strong. Since then, the UK has lost it's entire steel industry. If the businesses in the local economies can't compete with Chinese imports then maybe it is time to ban or tax them!

Although unaffected in the UK, I suspect that will change, in my 65 years on this planet, we have never once has cheeper cars than mainland Europe, and only because of taxes. The UK will have a new government in 3 weeks time, and they will be looking for any revenue they can find.

Lets see what happens to the tariffs when China hammers down on sales from European car companies in China itself (BMW, Mercedes, Audi and Volkswagen). Lets see if Ursula von der Leyen will rollback the tariffs. I really hope China will screw the European companies in China...all the better for Xpeng, Li auto, Nio etc. This childish behavior is not only a testiment of Europe's hypocrisy, but its also giving the big finger to European citizens/customers. Basically they withold us of buying better and cheaper EV's than provided by the European car companies.

Personaly, i think the European politicians are a bunch of idiots who hasnt learned from the past what protectionism can lead too, and I find these extra tariffs just as stupid as if u pointed a gun to your own foot and pulled the tricker.. Also.. A group of The Norwegian traders where in China to see and learn about the factories there, and they visited a couple of different car manufacturers.. and they said, that one thing really hit their eyes.. and that was that the Chinese car factories, used about 30-40% LESS manual labor and people in the process then they have seen by VW, Mercedes and such Western fabrics, and against US it was even higher number, since US uses a lot of manual labour in their plants. This they could do because the high use of Robots in their plants in China.. and of course that also helps a lot to lower the prices for us consumers.. But Americans dont like to change their thinking and spent money on innovation, and the Europeans factories have been too slow understanding that they need to innovate and upgrade their proces lines for a future with robot tech.

Inside me there is always a cry out, when i hear that VW sells the ID3 for 15.000€ in china while in EU for 30.000€ (or more!) to the stupid people.

You're so salty about this... But you can't deny that Chinese companies enjoy things like: - lower wages - heavy State financial help - lower energy costs due to a lack of interest in climate issues Such tariffs simply compensate for such unfair advantage. They are fair.

Basically all ev new in the eu , us and uk are not for anyone who can benefit from them. The people who need a cheap city car don’t have a sensible option that isn’t an ice car.

The real winners when it comes to the EV tariffs are those of us in the rest of the world who should see many more EV options come available faster as China looks for less restrictive markets to do business in. Just hoping that we don't join in with the tariffs - especially countries with no car manufacturing industries to protect.
